Rachel Tay lightbulbRachel Tay is originally from Singapore. She came to Vancouver in 2013 and crushed our full-time diploma program. Her final demo reel was amazing! She was immediately scooped up by Scanline VFX to work as a 3D Generalist over the next three years on blockbusters such as Fast and Furious 7, San Andreas, Pan, Batman vs Superman, King Arthur, Guardians of the Galaxy vol.2 and Justice League.

Rachel was grateful for her time with Scanline as she was able to hone her craft and build a strong foundation within the 3D pipeline. It also helped pave the way for her to accept an exciting position as a Lighting TD halfway around the world in Wellington, New Zealand with Weta Digital. Weta is an award-winning company known for their outstanding work on Avatar, Planetblue butterfly of the Apes, Jungle Book and The Lord of The Rings.

Her journey from Singapore to Vancouver to New Zealand wasn’t an easy one. Rachel put in countless hours and a great deal of hard work and dedication to make it happen. She learned some key lessons along the way and has the following tips to share with anyone aspiring to get into the CG industry:

  • Learning CG/art doesn’t just begin at school, it is all around you. Take the time to observe your surroundings and figure out why things look a certain way, or why some pictures look good and why they evoke certain emotions.
  • Collect stories of even the most mundane things in life and you will find they will translate into your work.
  • Never stop learning.
