Speak with a Think Tank Graduate

Representing Think Tank at each Mozaik XPO India event will be 3D Generalist, Karthik Suresh. Currently working for The Sequence Group, Karthik graduated from Think Tank in 2019. We recently caught up with Karthik from his home in Bengaluru, India, to ask him about bit about his journey from school to studio, and what he’ll be up to at this year’s
XPO:

Think Tank: What do you currently do for work?
Karthik Suresh: I am a 3D generalist at Sequence Group. I previously was an Asset modeler at Moving Picture Company and prior to that, a texture artist at Xentrix Animation studios.

TT: What Mozaik Play Convention(s) will you be attending?
KS: I will be at all three Mozaik play India Expo conventions. Bangalore, Hyderabad and then Mumbai.

TT: What will you be doing at Mozaik?
KS: Proving to the attendees why Think Tank holds one of the top spots on the Rookies list and why it is one of the best CG schools in the world. And that is coming from experience!

TT: What did you specialize in at Think Tank, and what are your interests in CG Art?
KS: I took up Character creation for VFX and film. This involved learning multiple aspects of the production pipeline. Modeling, texturing, surfacing, lighting and compositing for good p
resentation. I am currently interested in exploring a variety of surreal art styles that CG art can help create.

TT: What’s one memory about school that sticks out to you?
KS: During my last semester, everyone in my classroom was in their mentorship semester. Whenever one of my classmates or mentors would end a session, everyone else including me would huddle around him and pick his brain trying to learn what he had learnt during that week’s session. That sense of group learning and sharing of knowledge with nothing held back was was always something I held dear to me. We all wanted each other to grow together!

TT: What would your advice be to someone thinking about learning CG Art remotely?
KS: Do your best to make connections. Be it your classmates around the world, or your mentors, or maybe someone you realize is undergoing similar training as you, or is already a professional in that specific specialization. It is easy to forget others around you when you are alone at your desk studying remotely, but maintaining connections helps you learn and grow far more than you could alone. Take off the blinders and look around!

TT: Do you have a dream job? Maybe you’re doing it already, but describe it to us!
KS: My Dream job would be that of an Art Director that is a jack of all trades. Knowing every aspect of the VFX pipeline and being able to help out on the floor, while also being able to figure out the art style of any given project. I have always looked up to senior artists who didn’t specialize in one thing, but knew so much about every aspect and were willing to help a project out however they could. Becoming a 3D Generalist and getting involved in multiple aspects of the pipeline gets me closer to my vision.
